The Yunnan International Festival of Russian Music is China’s first international music competition centered on Russian music repertoire, aiming to discover and cultivate outstanding music talent and promote deep international cultural and artistic exchange.
The 2026-2027 “China-Russia Education Year” follows the successful 2025 “China-Russia Culture Year” as another national-level thematic year, with bilateral student exchange surpassing 80,000 and university partnerships steadily expanding. Against this backdrop, this festival is jointly launched by leading Chinese and Russian music institutions, benchmarked against top-tier international competitions, and stands as a rare Chinese international music event with chamber music as its core evaluation dimension.
The festival pioneers a “Solo + Chamber” dual-track scoring: finalists in the Artist category must perform a piano trio live with professional violinists and cellists, playing classic works by Arensky or Mendelssohn. The jury comprises authoritative experts from China, Russia, Italy, Korea and beyond, ensuring globally aligned assessment and professional standards.

How Prizes Are Awarded
The festival presents awards in four categories: Junior (comprising Children, Junior A, Junior B and Junior groups), Teen (comprising Teen A and Teen B groups), Youth (comprising Youth A and Youth B groups), and the Artist Division. Within the Junior, Teen and Youth categories, the top three of each age group receive medals and certificates of honor; final-round scores of each category are then combined and ranked, and the top three of each category receive certificates of honor, with cash prizes awarded to the 1st and 2nd places. The Artist Division is an independent professional division with one First, one Second and one Third Prize, each awarded cash prizes, a trophy and a certificate of honor. Category 1st-place winners receive a one-on-one masterclass with an international juror; 2nd and 3rd places receive seats at open masterclasses by Chinese musicians.

FAQ
What are the repertoire requirements?
The preliminary round requires one piece of your choice, with duration limits by age group (3 to 15 minutes). Final-round programs must include works by Russian composers; detailed requirements are in the competition prospectus. For preliminaries, you may submit a video or attend an in-person regional round.
Can non-professional students participate?
Yes. The competition features multiple divisions covering different ages and levels. Both professional students and amateur enthusiasts are welcome to register.
How do I advance from the preliminary to the final round?
A preliminary-round score of 85 points or above advances to the final. Regional in-person preliminaries are judged by each region’s three-member jury; online video submissions are assessed centrally by the organizing committee under the same standards.
Which cities host regional rounds?
Three regions host in-person preliminaries: Liaoning, Sichuan and Yunnan. All regions are open to Non-Artist Divisions, while the Artist Division qualifies directly for the Main Competition via the online preliminary round. Regional preliminary dates: Liaoning December 26–27, 2026; Sichuan January 2–3, 2027; Yunnan January 16–17, 2027 (all tentative); online video submission is also available.
Is accommodation provided during the main competition?
The main competition is held in Kunming, Yunnan. The organizing committee provides recommended hotels and transportation guidance. Participants arrange their own accommodation. Details are in the participant handbook.
